The character of Wild Karl, together with his feathered sidekick Gumpel, was created as a concept for a beer‑bar that never saw the light of day. The name Gumpel is a wordplay: the German bird “Gimpel” (a finch) merges with “Kumpel,” which means mate or buddy. Wild Karl himself is imagined as the bar’s charismatic owner‑farmer—a hops enthusiast who just loves a good beer.
